Whole Foods Market Bowery is the fourth New York location for the Austin-based natural foods retailer and the largest grocery store in Manhattan. In addition to Whole Foods’ typical emphasis on high-quality food offerings, there are three sit-down dining venues, a cooking school, a fromagerie, a beer store, extensive food production facilities and offices.

The interior design retains most of the unfinished concrete shell as a nod to the store’s Bowery context and as a strategy to control costs. Transparent exterior walls maximize daylighting and connect the interior with the city. This approach highlights the merchandise and displays, contrasting them with both the raw concrete interior and the urban setting.

Redbud Theater Complex is a vibrant new home for Texas Woman’s University Drama Department. The new 20,000 sf state-of-the-art facility is built within historic 1953 Hubbard Hall which originally housed the university’s dining halls.

A full-length undulating and canted wall creates a series of public lobby spaces. In the back-of-house, a parallel corridor connects the Theater and Rehearsal Room with the new greenroom, make-up spaces, academic offices and costume and scene shops.

Redbud Theater is an intimate, 120-seat theater that combines a frontal proscenium arrangement with flexible educational space for various student performances. The proscenium wall incorporates reclaimed glass panels from the old dining halls. These fluted glass panels create an acoustical reflector over the stage to enhance speech and are backlit to provide dramatic lighting for performances.

Whole Foods flagship introduction into the U.K. natural foods market is located in the historic Barkers Department Store on London’s Kensington High Street. With 130,000 square feet arranged on five levels, it is the largest of five Whole Foods stores in the UK. The design recalls the original interior character of this historical building while creating a new vertical flow for an integrated shopping experience.

The upper level food court features a trattoria, sushi bar, juice bar, dessert bar, organic pub and extensive seating areas. In addition to large perishable departments on the lower level, the ground floor includes an in-store bakery, regional fromagerie, wine bar and full service deli.

Through its simple design and remote setting, the Solidago Sanctuary of The Crossings offers guests moments of welcome, focus, discovery, meditation, surprise and delight. This restful setting instills calm and quiet while interwoven and unexpected architectural elements inspire creative thinking.

Guests enter the Solidago Sanctuary by a path across a stone bridge representative of “The Crossings” concept. The Sanctuary serves as the spiritual center of the retreat with its hand-carved symbols embedded in its stone courtyard walls. The Chapel’s design uses light, air, and orientation to encourage quiet moments of contemplation or open, joyous gatherings.

Whole Foods Market-Plymouth Meeting is located just outside of Philadelphia in Plymouth Township. The energy efficient design uses sun louvers and day lighting to allow maximum sunlight within the store while reducing heat gain. As with all Whole Foods stores, incorporating local materials is a priority and this project features reclaimed wood soffits from local mills, recycled-content tiles in service departments and repurposed factory tables in dining areas. The exterior façade is also skinned with innovative wood-resin composite panels made with timber from sustainable forests.

Special designs of wood and steel enhance each department and venue. Plus, the Cold Point Pub, a 30-seat in-store pub, highlights local beers and specialty ales. Visitors also enjoy dining al fresco on the store’s outdoor roof terrace, landscaped with indigenous foliage and offering views of the local township.

The Crossings is a 154,000 square foot conference facility, progressive learning center, and leadership retreat. The complex is situated on a portion of a 220-acre tract near Lake Travis, west of Austin, Texas. The award winning and environmentally friendly facility includes separate buildings serving as: welcome center, conference center with multiple meeting rooms; dining hall with café and bookstore; eight lodges for guest accommodations, maintenance building and gatehouse.

The Crossings leadership center offers a variety of programs in inspirational spaces to provide experiences for renewal and transformation. The Conference Center consists of a 200-seat main hall, a 75-seat theatre and a library that doubles as a meeting space and resource center. The Cypress Creek Dining Hall’s spacious design includes a natural pine cathedral ceiling, a limestone fireplace, and an outdoor deck area overlooking Lake Travis.

Buildings are configured to create useful outdoor spaces that extend the guest experience into the natural landscape. Exterior materials reflect the building traditions of the Central Texas region while the building massing strives to reduce the extensive area requirements to a more intimate scale.

Competition Entry
Location: Hendersonville, North Carolina

This design for Mill Center for the Arts, located in Hendersonville, North Carolina, connects the new arts center with Hendersonville’s historic main street and the passage to the mountain range beyond. The Center is organized by linked public spaces with an open performance court, arts court and children’s garden. Flexible rehearsal spaces, classrooms and studios open onto the series of public spaces to encourage and celebrate the interaction of artists with the community.

The juxtaposition of the distinct curved shape of the new lobby tower with the existing mill building creates a strong identity for the new Arts Center. The tower, with its colorfully lapping ceramic panels, serves as a marquee on the town’s main avenue. The transparent lobby is also a vertical public room showcasing the Center’s cultural and social activities within an embracing timber frame.

Outdoor covered porches provide community gathering spaces with views of the existing mill building, downtown Hendersonville and the nearby mountains.

The Wellness Spa is centrally located within The Crossings complex and features thoughtfully designed landscaping, fountains, and a spectacular view of nearby Lake Travis. Conducive to total relaxation, the spa facilities include treatment rooms, massage rooms, steam rooms, sauna, watsu pool and locker rooms.

The Movement Room, with its hickory and pecan wood floor, ample natural lighting and large windows, overlooks a beautiful valley

The site design of the spa was guided by the desire to connect guests with the striking Hill Country landscape through views and the indoor/outdoor experience.
